Are dogs allowed on site?

Guide dogs and any other medical assistance dogs are welcome to all areas of the grounds (when accompanied by their owner). In certain circumstances, well-behaved dogs will be welcome into the Service Hall, if their owner was the deceased. In all cases, dogs to remain on a short lead and please respect the grounds and clean up any mess. If unsure, please contact us to enquire.

What happens to jewellery and any personal effects?

All of the contents of the coffin are cremated along with the deceased in its entirety.

How soon after the ceremony is the body cremated?

Usually within a few hours but under guidelines drawn up by the ICCM (Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management) always within 72 hours. This means the remains are cremated at the time which will cause the least environmental impact.

What happens to the cremated remains?

The cremated remains are available 48 hours after the funeral unless otherwise specifically requested. They can be interred or scattered within the grounds, which can be witnessed if desired. Various memorials are available, but ultimately what happens to them is the decision of the applicant for cremation.

Are the cremated remains really that of my loved one?

Yes – All cremations are completed individually in accordance with the institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM) Guiding Principles for Cremation. Each cremation service has a unique identification number and label which follows the deceased and whole cremation process.

Can I tour the facilities at any time?

Yes – the grounds all have free access during opening hours, the Service hall and crematory area however is with the permission and guidance of the team only.

Can I witness the placing of the coffin into the cremator?

Yes – for safety reasons numbers are limited but up to six people can be permitted to witness.

Do I have to use a funeral director?

In our experience, it is always better to go through a funeral professional but it is not a requirement.

Do you have catering facilities?

We have no permanent facilities but can put you in touch with local outside catering firms or local publicans.

Can I place flowers?

Floral tributes received on the day of the funeral will be displayed within our designated Floral Tribute area.
They will remain on display for a minimum of two days following the Funeral. After this time, and if not collected by the family, they will, at the discretion of East Devon Crematorium, be removed and disposed of.
East Devon Crematorium is unable to accept responsibility for any floral tributes left at the Crematorium either before, during or after a funeral.

How long do we have for the cremation service?

Depending on your selection at the funeral arrangement (usually 30 or 45 minutes) – this includes complete entry and exit of the congregation. You can pay for additional time – please ask your funeral director for more information.

What sort of memorial or marker is allowed?

Do I have to live locally?

You don’t have to live within the local area to be cremated here; we are open to all – no matter where you live.

Is the ground consecrated?

No, any faith can be cremated and cremated remains scattered/buried here and it does not matter where you live, the charges are the same. However, Individual graves can be blessed at the time of burial.

Is embalming permitted?

Yes.

What type of coffin, casket or urn is acceptable?

Most coffins, caskets and urns bought from a funeral director will be acceptable. Your local funeral director will be able to supply you with a wide range of options.
