Wildlife & sustainability

Set in 8 acres of land and featuring a mix of native broadleaved trees, formal lawns and shrub borders with a wild flower and grass meadow looked upon from a timber framed pavilion. Seating areas allow time for rest and reflection.

Our team of dedicated groundsmen ensure that a wide variety of trees, plants and wildlife thrive throughout the year.

Our grounds may appear unkempt at certain times of the year. For example, the grass may be left long and vegetation uncut in some areas. This is to protect nesting birds and create natural habitats that are more favourable for wildlife, such as butterflies and bees.

Ecological surveys in partnership with Devon Wildlife Trust have shown the site provides a good range of habitats for bats, including common and soprano pipistrelle bats and the rarer horseshoe bat; a range of insects including emperor dragonflies and damselflies; along with many species of butterfly, including meadow brown and the cinnabar moth, a UN biodiversity action plan priority species; and around 25 species of birds.

The site is also home to great crested newts. Great crested newts are a protected species under wildlife law so should not be disturbed if seen.
